Why You Gas Out So Fast
You can be strong, you can be in “good shape,” you can even be highly fit... and still completely gas out after just a few rounds of real movement. I see this all the time. Guys who lift heavy, do their cardio, and always train consistently, but the moment they have to sprint, jump, or repeat high-effort, high output work their performance drops off almost immediately.
They gas out.
And when that happens, most people assume they just need to log more miles and “get in better shape." But that doesn't solve the issue. Because the real problem is that these athletes are missing a very specific type of conditioning. They aren’t under-conditioned. They’re just conditioned incorrectly.
Sustainability vs. Repeatability
When most people think about conditioning, they picture things like:
jogging for 30 minutes
slogging away on the treadmill or stationary bike
or just “doing cardio” at the end of a workout
Slow, steady, traditional zone 2 work. And while those things can improve heart health and general fitness, and even promote recovery and overall well being, they don’t actually solve the conditioning problem most athletes run into. Because the issue isn’t just being able to go for a long time at a slow pace. The issue is repeatability. There’s a big difference between being able to sustain effort, and being able to reproduce effort. And if you don’t understand that difference, you can spend a lot of time “doing cardio” without ever actually becoming athletically conditioned.
But if you want to become athletically conditioned, the question you have to ask yourself is: can you produce meaningful force, recover quickly, and then produce meaningful force again …over and over and over?
That’s what real athletic conditioning is, and it’s the missing piece for a lot of people who are otherwise very strong and fit. Aerobic conditioning gives you the ability to sustain low grade effort. Strength gives you the ability to produce force. But athletic conditioning determines how many times you can do it before everything starts to break down.
Here is a really simple example of what this looks like in practice. Let’s say you go out and do sprint work. The first sprint feels great — explosive, powerful, sharp, and fast. The second sprint is still solid and mostly sharp. But by the third sprint things have stagnated. The nervous system ramp has peaked and plateaued, and some fatigue has begun to accumulate.
By the 4th sprint the output actually drops. Coordination isn’t quite as sharp. Power is fading. The nervous system ramp has peaked, plateaued, and now regressed.
And by the fifth or sixth effort, you’re not even training speed anymore — you’re just surviving the workout. And it’s not because you lack aerobic endurance. It’s because you lack the ability to recover and reproduce high output repeatedly. That drop-off is not a strength issue, and it’s not just a general “conditioning” issue. It’s a very specific type of conditioning limitation concerning your ability to recover and reproduce high output efforts repeatedly.
The Conditioning Mistake
Naturally, when people notice this limitation, they try to fix it. And this is where things start to go sideways because the most common solution people turn to is:
“Alright, I'm not in game shape so I just need to do more cardio.”
So they start jogging more. They add longer sessions. They try to build endurance. And this is where Zone 2 training has become really popular. And for good reason! Zone 2 training has massive benefits in its own right: it builds and improves your aerobic base, it’s great for general health and fitness, and it can even help with recovery.
But here’s the problem: that’s not the same quality that’s limiting athletic performance. With Zone 2 you're getting better at going slow for a long time, but not better at going fast repeatedly. This can also have a secondary negative effect on training as well because now you’re adding a lot of fatigue to your weekly workload without improving the specific abilities you actually need.
So you can end up stuck in this weird middle ground where you're not explosive enough to be truly athletic, and not conditioned enough to repeat high output efforts. Instead, you're Just kind of tired.
Output is the Goal
The major problem here is simply that most conditioning methods don’t respect output quality. They prioritize fatigue over performance. You’re tired, your heart rate is high, you feel like you worked hard — but your actual ability to produce force during movement, move efficiently and in a highly coordinated fashion, and repeat high output efforts is getting worse as the session goes on. That’s not targeted athletic conditioning. That’s just uncontrolled fatigue accumulation.
So instead of thinking about conditioning as just “doing cardio,” it’s more useful to think about it as training your ability to repeat high-quality efforts. A simple way to approach this is by doing short bursts of high output, followed by enough recovery to maintain performance, repeated over multiple rounds.
That could look like sprint intervals, sled pushes, rowing intervals, etc. The specific tool doesn’t matter as much as the structure. The goal is always the same: maintain near maximal output across many repeated efforts.
Train For Repeatability
Zone 2 trains your ability to sustain sub-maximal effort, but athletic performance requires you to reproduce very high intensity effort. Those are not the same thing. Zone 2 can support this process, but it doesn’t directly train it.
Being able to go for a long time at a steady pace is one skill. Being able to go hard, recover quickly, and then go hard again is a completely different skill. And if all of your conditioning is focused on steady-state work you can get very good at that aspect, while still being highly limited in the other. That’s why you’ll see people who can jog for 30–45 minutes or ride a bike for an hour, but gas out almost immediately when they do something like a sprint and the intensity spikes. Because they’ve built an aerobic base, but they haven’t built an engine that can handle repeated high outputs.
Athletic conditioning is about one thing: maintaining output across repeated efforts. Not just producing force once. But producing it again, and again, and again without a massive drop-off. The session is structured around output — short bursts of maximal or near maximal intensity, followed by enough recovery to preserve performance, repeated over multiple rounds, and then built up slowly over time.
That structure is what trains your body to recover quickly and maintain high output. Not just to survive maximal effort, but reproduce it over and over again at a high level with minimal drop-off no matter how many times you repeat it. We aren't just “doing cardio.” We are training our ability to maintain maximal output across repeated efforts.
Because at the end of the day, performance isn’t just about what you can do once. It’s about what you can do over and over again.
